When the World Feels Too Heavy: A Note From My Altar

When the World Feels Too Heavy: A Note From My Altar

Table of Contents

Some days, even breathing feels heavy. The world’s pain piles up in our inboxes and on our screens, and it’s easy to feel powerless when those in charge seem hungry for power but not empathy.

Lately I’ve been feeling it too, that relentless weight. Every scroll through the news feels darker, every headline louder. If you’re reading this and you’re feeling heavy, overwhelmed, angry, or lost you’re not alone. I’m right there with you.

The truth is, constant exposure to hurt and injustice takes a toll on us all. Especially for those of us who feel things deeply. We’re not “too sensitive” our sensitivity is proof of our humanity, and it’s something to be proud of.

Here are a few small, practical things that help me when the noise becomes too much. Maybe one or two will help you today too:

    Pause the Scroll

Put your phone down for a few minutes. Step away from the endless cycle of bad news. Give yourself permission to switch off . It doesn’t make you uncaring, it makes you human.

    Ground Yourself

    Try the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique:

    • 5 things you can see

    • 4 things you can touch

    • 3 things you can hear

    • 2 things you can smell

    • 1 thing you can taste

It sounds simple, but it brings you back into the present moment.

    Take One Small Action

Sign a petition. Donate a few pounds. Write to an MP. Even the tiniest act is a spark of agency and proof that we can still try and shape the world in small but meaningful ways.

    Create a Ritual

Light a candle. Play a song that soothes you. Make a cup of tea. Sometimes a few minutes of intentional stillness is enough to steady the storm. Ritual doesn’t have to be elaborate, it just has to be yours.

If the Weight Becomes Too Much

If the heaviness starts to turn into despair, please reach out.

In the UK you can call Samaritans on 116 123 (free) or text SHOUT to 85258 for 24/7 text support. You are not a burden. You matter.

We might not be able to change the whole world overnight, but we can take care of ourselves and each other. That’s how movements grow. That’s how hope survives.

Feel free to drop a comment below and tell us one thing that calmed your day, one ritual you turn to when you need it . We’re here for each other.

From my little altar to yours — take a breath, take a pause, take care. 🖤
